CLASS GUIDE

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)

A full contact combat sport that allows a wide variety of fighting techniques, from a mixture of martial arts traditions and non-traditions, to be used in competitions. The rules allow the use of striking and grappling techniques, both while standing and on the ground.

Today, mixed martial artists must cross-train in a variety of styles to counter their opponent's strengths and remain effective in all the phases of combat. For instance, a stand-up fighter will have little opportunity to use their skills against a submission artist who has also trained in take downs. Many traditional disciplines remain popular as ways for a fighter to improve aspects of their game.

Popular Disciplines

•  Stand Up: Various forms of boxing, kickboxing/Muay Thai and forms of full contact karate are trained to

improve footwork, elbowing, kicking, kneeing and punching.

•  Clinch: Freestyle, Greco-Roman wrestling, Sambo and Judo are trained to improve clinching, takedowns and

throws, while Muay Thai is trained to improve the striking aspect of the dinch.

•  Ground: Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu and Judo are trained to improve submission holds and defence against

them. These styles are also trained to improve and maintain ground control.

Boxing

One of the most physically demanding sports in the world, boxing necessitates a varied training regime, which allows the boxer to build up the fitness, techniques, agility, footwork and coordination.

Our classes will cover all aspects of boxing training from fitness, aerobic and cardiovascular routines using exercises such as sit ups, press ups, crunches, pull ups, squat thrusts and star jumps over several circuits helping to build up muscle and endurance and to improve mobility, strength, stamina and technique using bag and pad work.

As well as requiring high levels of aerobic energy and endurance, the power and strength demanded a need for high anaerobic energy levels. Using Plyometric exercises utilizes explosive bursts of energy and are used to improve muscle contractions and reaction times in order to respond quickly and powerfully to an opponent’s punch. Plyometric exercises include depth jumps, throws, short sprinting exercises and abdominal exercises using a medicine ball.
